Story has it that a group of reporters accompanied President Charles De Gaulle around the Élysée Palace in the 1960s. De Gaulle had a reputation for bombast and for having a big ego.
When the entourage arrived on the balcony, a reporter reputedly said: “What a beautiful day.” To which De Gaulle replied: “Thank you.”
We live in an ever increasingly small world. A world in which we are discouraged from playing big, or taking too much credit—it is PC to be modest and thank “the village.” A lot had changed since the 1960s!
I’m not suggesting that we should all primp and posture however maybe we should try to emulate the grandness of spirit manifested by De Gaulle. Truthful or not, it represented an approach to living and… taking responsibility.
On that day… at that time… he “owned” the day!
